Outcomes and reflection

Image
Critically reflect on the final outcomes and wider experience of undertaking your self-negotiated project for Unit X.  This unit x was another step towards completing the film that I intended to make many months ago and what I achieved was a further understanding of the nature of stop motion, it takes time. I'm still very far from completing a short film, for the eventual piece to be entered into film festivals. But through this unit, I've produced more content to showcase my abilities. I'm still disappointed that I haven't been able to develop the film further, but due to an infection I've been dealing with for the past five months I haven't been on my best performance.  Starting off, working from the previous project this led me to refine the story ideas. I decided to focus on the opening scene and the flying water tower squence  which had become the iconography of the city. I st...

Filming/ set design/ testing

Vertical looping set  Above is the three shots that I filmed hoping I could made a loop, however the problem occurred when my motion control rig could not reach past the point to blend the next scene in, I wanted a loop this way since the faces of the buildings change perspective as the camera moves in real life, these stubble changes make the set feel more believable. However unfortunately I can not achieve this at this moment in time, the next best option would be to create a flat image and then layer and move that in after-effects to simulate the buildings moving. this will be a good challenge of my after affects skills.  Above is a stitched together row of buildings I used from my captures from the previous attempts, this was done in photoshop. I removed most of the green screen to make keying easier. This method allows you to create any combination of building you wanted.  Above is a screen grab of the composited stitched collage, we can also see I duplicated l...

Development and construction

Scaling up  Since I was limited by time/ materials/ space and patience, I built the city set in a smaller scale than what my character would be changing of scales happens quite often in the industry of stop motion, for the mentioned reasons. However since my character will be interacting around the water tower, I have to create a full scale proportional to my characters size.    I've drawn an illustrated diagram for the construction of the water tower body to help visualise the building process. Two supporting disks are used to hold the scored sheet of grey board that forms the outer shell, the cut scoring marks also act like planks, so I keep those in the model. The cone is made from a larger grey board disk, again scored and then cut a notch out so you can fold it into a cone. Above the explosion diagram to help visualise my design of the support structure of the water tower, we can see each of the indyuvial parts that make up the build. These were made from a combinati...

Introduction, refinement and focus

Introduction  For this Unit X I am continuing working on my previous film from authorship. This movie has the intentions of being a demonstration of my work, showing off my set design / animation/ rigging/ homemade motion control rig and post production. which would be for potential clients or work opportunities and once the complete film is finished, to be entered into film festivals. However with the nature of stop motion and a infection I've been dealing with over the past 5 months I wasn't able to finish as much as I wanted, in authorship I tackled the one of the most time consuming and biggest scenes of the film. this being the shot through the city, which builds the world in which my film is set in. For unit x I plan to refine my focus on the other scenes develop the story further.  Refinement of story and focus  Since making the run through the buildings scene my ideas have changed and developed from the process of that project. The water tower which h...
